Friends of Fort Liberté - Ministry Update

Dear Friends,

You’ve probably heard things are bad in Haiti, and it’s true – but there is much good, as well. Within the struggles of poverty and inflation, Haitian people live their lives as best they can, always with hope that things will be better. One source of that hope in the northeast of Haiti is the Eben-Ezer Clinic. Away from the areas making world news, the clinic in Fort Liberte quietly goes about the business of providing consistent medical care for hundreds of our most desperate brothers and sisters.

Staffed by dedicated nurses and doctors, some brought up and educated under the Friends sponsorship program, the clinic serves 40-50 patients a day. Special diabetic/hypertension clinics draw 350-450 more each month for monitoring and medications. Thus far, with the support of people like you, FFL has been able to provide the needed medicines and supplies. Keeping up with increased patient load and inflation, however, is becoming more difficult. Costs for basic supplies have increased from approximately $5,000 every 8-12 weeks to nearly $15,000. Of particular concern, the source of nearly free insulin has been lost to us, so an additional $500-$1,000 must be found to provide for the insulin-dependent patients who already depend on us for this life sustaining treatment. Our overall cost of Clinic operations increased by 25% in 2023, but our donations did not. Thus, it seems dreams of expansion and additional services must remain on the wish list for a while longer. But the miracle remains that this entire vital healthcare operation is maintained year round on just a little over $100,000.00 per year. We feel sure that it can be sustained if enough people who already care are made aware of the need.

The number of short-term mission trips to Fort Liberte that generated support for Eben-Ezer Clinic was greatly curtailed by the COVID-19 pandemic and by continuing problems in Haiti, but the needs remain. Through these difficult months, the FFL mission has remained strong simply because many supporters have remained faithful. Those Friends of Fort Liberte are needed more than ever now, and more regular Clinic donors are needed. If you, your service group, church or workplace can join us in this outreach, please do. Surely you will know the blessings that follow.

It’s not difficult to become a regular sponsor of the Eben-Ezer Clinic, or to give special gifts as you are able. You can follow the donate button, or log onto www.friendsoffortliberte.com, create an account, and choose Clinic as either an ongoing or one time donation.
